History of the Grateful Dudes
Rodger and
Scott first met in the early eighties when they joined a band called
'Pacific Light Opry'. Barry Berkowitz was the originator, and was a bit
put off when the band was billed at the Banjo Café in Santa Monica as
the 'PLO'. Barry quickly changed the name of the band to 'High Strung'.
Over the years there were many band members who came and went, but all
remained good friends (except Barry). In the late eighties, Rodger and
Scott started playing at Vincenzo's as 'The Grateful Dudes' with Ron
Sutton (dobro), Tom Corbett
(mandolin), and
Rob Carlson (bass). Around 1993, Ron and Tom left the band,
and
Dennis Fetchet joined. Rob
Carlson left a few years later to pursue songwriting.
Bill Bryson, who had played in the 'Bluegrass Cardinals' with
Dennis, joined the 'Dudes playing bass.
Over the years, many great musician/buddies have
played with the Dudes as guest players or 'subdudes'.
They include
Dean Knight (bass),
Dick Fegy (mandolin),
John Schlocker
(banjo),
Bob Applebaum
(mandolin), Ross Landry (guitar/mandolin), Bill Knopff (banjo), Kenny
Blackwell (mandolin/guitar), Phil Salazar
(fiddle), Tony Recupido (guitar), Andrew Paddock (bass),
Rudi Ekstein (bass), Herb Pederson
(banjo), Roger Reed (guitar), and Bruce Johnson (fiddle).
Each of the Grateful Dudes is a superb musician, and
some of the top bluegrass artists visit Vincenzo's to play with the
'Dudes on Saturday nights.
